Hi Everyone.

I just retired from the military and got offered a job with EDJ under their FORCES program. I'm taking it. I'm scheduled to start in the next 2 weeks and am excited/nervous/curious...

Not that I plan to by lazy in my studies, but I'm not too concerned with the Series 7 and Series 66. I hear the EDJ program makes it almost impossible to fail, and I graduated from one of the tougher schools on the planet. That being said, any insight on making my study time more productive would be greatly appreciated.

I'm primarily concerned about what it really takes to grow a successful business as an FA with EDJ. I appreciate the business model, and I am ready to put my nose to the grind stone (knocking on businesses and neighborhoods, social organizations etc), but there has to be a "secret" to maximize the effectiveness of these efforts that's nearly universally applicable. I'm hoping perhaps someone will share their insights, tips and advice.

Thanks for reading, and I look forward to interesting discussions on the forums!

Made me laugh.
Especially when I noticed you misspelled mustache

To answer the OP. Just do what the training tells you to do.

OP - the "secret" is to keep doing it and don't get burned out. People fail by looking for a better way. The only way you will succeed (unless you know tons of really rich dumb people) is through hard (tedious) work. Put your head down, do what they tell you, and in 3 years peek your head up to see what your options are.

Like Hacksaw said, its all about finding something you can do, over and over and over again, that gets you in front of people with money. Telling your story to as many people as you can.

There is no magic bullet, its all grunt work.

There was a time when the training consultants study material was idiot proof...ok well maybe not....but the new stuff is not a slam dunk. Do not take it lightly. Start warming up network now. If you are going to count on killing it from knocking on doors than you will get frustrated. Look everywhere for business.

I can't really comment on how it is there now, because I think they have canned their proprietary training in favor of a 3rd party like Kaplan or something, due to some recent changes to the S7. The old training for me made it ludicrously easy for me, but I will tell you that fully 1/2 of the people that were in my s7 test class were let go by the time all testing was done. Either I was in a class anomaly or they figured out pretty quick who wasn't going to pass and got proactive so the passing rates looked good. Just my experience, which is worth $.50

Thanks, everyone.

To answer RIA, I have a mustache and a neatly-groomed beard. Wink

I speak Italian, Chinese, and enough Spanish to get in trouble. I'll have to improve the Spanish (since I'm moving to the Houston area), but there's a good sized Chinese population there, too. There aren't any Chinese FAs there or FAs that speak Mandarin that I know of, so perhaps that market will be (a bit) warmer for me.

Thanks again!

First - thank you for your service.

Second - EDJ is a shithole, but depending upon your Branch/MOS/AFSC/WHATEVERTHEYCALLITINTHENAVY you might like it there.

Third - Again, depending upon your military job, your military experience may end up being more relevant than the tough school you went to.

Fourth - Welcome to the forum.  There is a lot of really good information, and assholes.  And assholes with assholes.

Don't knock on every door like they tell you. Only knock on ones with money or a nice house. Don't try to sell crap over the phone like they "teach" you, just try to get appointments, get statements and make a pitch for the all their assets. Try and build a fee based biz an not worry about taking an upfront rip to make goals. This is coming from an ex Joneser who was on regional leadership team his first year and won two div rips first year and didn't get any assets. Jones taught some basic principals, but many are archaic and the "formula" can be improved upon...just don't mention it. Always mention you are following formula and you will be fine. Your goal should be to bring in 5 million a year in new assets, don't take crappy accounts. Good luck door knocking in the butthole of America!

What keeps it interesting is that a lot of the assholes; including this one^^, have some of the best information. You might say they shit knowledge.

But then again, some assholes just shit shit.

Either way, get out your pooper scooper.

Welcome.
