Hello Everyone. I am job hunting for a Financial Advisor position. This will be my second attempt at becoming a Financial Advisor. I lasted just under one year back in 2008 (great year). I passed the CFP and am taking my time looking for the right fit. I currently work as Medical Laboratory Technician but my passion for financial planning is getting the best of me. Anyone else out there in similar shoes?

I'll bet you're the kind of guy who legally can't go within 100 feet of a playground.

Jarceo,
First off, get the whole "finance is my passion" mantra out of your head. This is first and foremost a sales job. Especially in the first 3-5 years. You will spend almost all your time selling. So I would suggest you begin by coming up with 5-7 ways that you can attract clients. And then come up with a business plan to implement those sales strategies.

Is there a good story as to why it will work now when it wouldn't work in 08? Not being an ass, just a question you might get asked in an interview that you'd want to have a solid answer for. |

Just, can you imagine yourself in the environment of 2008, cold calling, door knocking, seminarians, and opening new households?

Fear paralyzes people... so you have to know how to deal with that.
But it's also a great time where people begin to lose faith in their advisors, so keeping in touch with people and being their #2 advisor... puts you in a great position to become their primary advisor when their current advisor messes up. Just make sure you don't get someone that is in the process of SUING that prior advisor... because the same thing may just happen to you. Anyone that has ever sued an insurance agent, registered rep, or financial advisor is automatically disqualified from ever being my client.

If I'm just, yes I can imagine that. But I don't know why seminarians would have been involved |

SN, I'll bet you're the kind of guy who repeatedly uses disturbing facts about himself to manufacture insults against others in order to throw the scent off his trail. |

I'm sort of in the same shoes as you, I've actually been hunting for an FA position for a few months now. I think I'm finally close to some kind of an offer (fingers crossed), but I started my search in late-march, and by the time I have an offer it may be close to 4 months.. I've been on a whole lot of interviews.
Like you my background doesn't have too much to do with finance. I'm attracted to the career, including what it can personally mean for my future, though I don't have any real "passion for the markets" or anything like that.
I'm not registered and don't have my CFP, but I'm sure they will like that you have all of that under your belt. Maybe look at Merrill's "Planner" TFA position - relatively new but I know they'll like the fact you already have the CFP. Like JTP said, they'll definitely want a good story about why you didn't make it in 08 then but will now. Age and life circumstance will play a role as well. While one advisor seemed hesitant to hire someone "young" to his team, another thought my age and circumstances (meaning no kids) were perfect for starting out in the business. |

Is that my grade or his? Either way, from a humor standpoint, it is getting old. And from a practical standpoint, he's always posting this shit in the first or second reply to any greenhorn, which creates a filter (I'm sure by design) through which any self-respecting advisor will have to think twice about entering. That diminishes the value of the board for everyone, IMO.
