Newbie here. A little backstory about myself: I started in the auto industry, so I'm not new to sales, but due to family reasons I went into insurance with a captive company in 2018. It was extremely difficult to be a hammer looking for nails. So I branched out and landed in an admin role under a small retirement planning team with MassMutual before the pandemic. I just completed my 7 & 66, with the Financial Planner designation under my firm to continue to work with this book of business and start to build my own. I am wrapping up my B.S. so I can start the CFP process, but before then I need to get the ball rolling. I want to find my niche clientele as I move forward and have a few ideas so I thought I'd jump on here to pick peoples brains on occasion and maybe avoid some pitfalls and future heartaches Beercheers!

Unfortunately, you're likely to fail.

I mean the failure rate in our industry is what, 90%? I failed twice before I made it work. Everyone is likely to fail starting out. New people in our industry need to embrace failure because the deck is stacked against you. This is a very tough industry to make it.

That said, I think just finding this forum increases your chances of success more than anything else. I know people here helped me a ton. But the old adage, anyone starting out needs to work like a dog for years, be disciplined, have thick skin, never never give up.

Instead of wasting your time getting designations why don't you go prospect?

Right.
You do nothing but prospect during the work day.
You study for designations on your own time. I would study for mine from 9 to 11pm or 10 to midnight. That's it. Never studied during the day unless it was while I was eating a quick lunch, that was if I even took a lunch. You have to learn to efficient as fuck with your time. I'd be falling asleep studying at night so I'd take pre-workout to get extra energy until I passed out.

Are designations even worth it? I'm all for continued education but I've talked with quite a few advisors that have no desire to ever get them.

For the people here with designations: did the knowledge from them really help your reputation/strategies?

Using the knowledge to gain and keep clients is 95% of the value.

5% is them seeking out a CFP (which only happens with that designation).

There are lots of “advisors” at the fidelity call centers with a CFP. It won’t be what makes you successful in this business.

Here’s my limited take on it: if you have confidence, just learn the material to be a financial planner. If you’re confidence is shaky, it will definitely make you feel better. That’s my take on it. I do eyeroll at myself at times when I realize I’ve done 2 worthless ones and 1 mediocre one and the big one CFP. I’d still like to learn about the retirement income designation but not to put on the card. I just want all the knowledge. The more knowledge I have, the more confidence I’ll have.

It won't make a significant difference for a struggling advisor. If you move beyond the "struggling" phase, you should have a clearer idea of if/how it will help you as an individual. Not worth doing early in your career IMO.

In the unlikely event someone ever reads your ADV 2B and finds out you haven't graduated, sure, a designation might help to overcome any concern there. You can get the ChFC before you graduate if you really want to, then sit for the CFP when you do. The ChFC is all the same coursework plus a little more, so getting it isn't double the work/cost, aside from the examination itself.

But as others have mentioned, prospecting is more important. Because you're going to fail.

Thanks all for the warm welcome! LOL After being in and around the industry these past few years I’ve seen so many fail - yes even CFPs so I’m not phased by those odds. To me it’s just the knowledge and credibility I owe to my prospective clients while I don’t have the 30 years of experience some people look for.  It also isn’t an “either or” scenario. I have one class left for my bachelors and will likely not start the next steps until 2025, but in the meantime, I’m spending my days meeting with my target markets and cold calling from my senior advisors essentially orphaned clients. I am a mom with a preteen and stepkids in their teens *surprise surprise* and yes previously, I worked in sales for an auto dealership, so there’s really nothing thats going to hurt my feelings 😝A lot of advisors in our firm are new to sales and new to the industry, so I’m looking for a more seasoned crowd to chat with now and then.

That saying has been around at least 15 years.
