Good afternoon.  I found this forum through searching for a particular topic and it's refreshing to see a good ol' phpbb forum again.

I'm a 15 year high school teacher and coach in the Midwest who's working to make a change in my career to financial advising.  I have an MBA and have run a lot of small side businesses and made a fair bit off of one pre-covid.  I'm 3/4 of the way through the hiring process for a firm that will sponsor my FINRA testing.

I've got a lot of practical sales funnel experience and have studied marketing pretty heavily.  I'm hoping I can use my knowledge and experience to build a book of business that sets me up for financial success that education doesn't.

Dang it, I'm too slow!

If you're a teacher, 403b market would be a good place to start. It's a sucky place to be long-term, but a great opportunity for rookies to cut their teeth. And a very notorious AH member built a successful practice from that space. I know other, non-AHers who've done the same.

One of my target markets is planned to be female teachers approaching retirement. I've seen it often enough, female teachers are less likely to be the breadwinner of the family in comparison to male teachers.

Female teachers are targets for many of us here...

Which firm you going to? The mean green machine?

So what's the sales angle, then?

Target individuals through school websites then find a way into the schools serving breakfast in the lounge or something of that nature. The goal is an appointment but at a minimum filtering them into a sales funnel with an on-demand seminar I'll record.

Not bad. Pension education is a good angle to generate interest, because teachers generally don't a freaking clue about their own pensions.

Your angle is to try to get the husband's assets also. Obviously, there's going to be a huge variety of backgrounds, but teachers are often married to "upper class blue collar" and "lower class white collar" men. Many of these people suck at saving for retirement, so they might not have a ton of assets, but they likely won't have an advisor either.

Exactly.  I know the struggles of education and can relate to people who have been in it for a long time. The goal is to make myself an attractive character in a way where I can help solve their problems and guide them through the next big change in life.

I've got other markets I'm looking at as well and I'm not opposed to door knocking.  As a former wrestling and wrestling coach I don't have a lot of quit in me.

Don’t know about other states, but CA has a website where you can find all district employee salaries. If you can figure out the email configuration for the district, you can blast an email to the highest earners for seminars. Easy way to build a list and drive attendance for basically free.

Does the firm you are talking to have a payroll slot for the 403b plans in the area already?

My state has it, I use it during professional development sessions to see what the people teaching me stupid things in the district make.  It's sickening.

I've always done stupid amounts of research on things/people.  I knew before I talked to the recruiter that her son was a top-ranked wrestler in his state (different) and in an FA interview I asked his favorite baseball team in small talk.  He looked around the room for signs of baseball since they were renovating and the interview was at a plastic folding table. There weren't any.

It sounds like you'll be great at prospecting avoidance!

No, you're right. You're going to be super efficient reading three hours online about a prospect for every hour you meet with them.

I BELIEVE -- that one day I'll make enough money to justify a suit I didn't purchase from Burlington Coat Factory.

GK clients are ideal. Very responsive and interested in planning, tons of uncovered assets they've been dying to bring over, and of course never leave when their CD comes due. The more Simple IRA's the better in my book. I wish I had hundreds just like them.
